Kiyosumi Garden is a stroll-style landscape garden designed for visitors to enjoy its scenery while walking around the pond. Around the large central pond, where wild birds gather, notable stones collected from across Japan and artificial hills are carefully arranged, earning it the name “Garden of Famous Stones.” You can take in the dynamic views right up close to the water’s surface.

A garden that has served as a place of comfort and spiritual refuge for people.

In 1878, Iwasaki Yataro acquired this area and planned the construction of a garden to serve as a place for employee recreation and for hosting distinguished guests. In 1880, it opened as “Fukagawa Shinbokuen.” After Yataro’s death, the work continued, incorporating a large central pond fed by water from the Sumida River and notable stones gathered from across Japan, culminating in the completion of a stroll-style landscape garden representative of the Meiji era.

Although it suffered extensive damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake, the garden served as an evacuation site during the disaster and helped save many lives. It was later donated to the city of Tokyo as parkland for public use.

Taisho Memorial Hall

In 1928, the funeral hall used for the funeral of Emperor Taisho was relocated here.

After being destroyed in wartime air raids, it was rebuilt in 1953 using materials from the funeral hall of Empress Teimei, and was fully renovated in 1989.

Ryotei

A sukiya-style building constructed so that it extends over the pond. It was built by the Iwasaki family in 1909 to welcome Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, who visited Japan as a state guest. The structure has been designated as a Tokyo-selected historic building.

You can enjoy a party inside the Taisho Memorial Hall while taking in views of a Japanese garden rich in history and carefully crafted detail. Before the party, guided walks through the garden are available, along with a toast on the lawn area, which is normally closed to the public.
