Enjoy an authentic feudal lord experience, featuring a grand entrance reenactment of the first lord of Ōzu Domain, Sadayasu Katō, arriving at the castle in 1617, celebratory gunfire using real matchlock rifles preserved since the Edo period, and moon-viewing sake served in the historic Kōran Yagura, an Important Cultural Property.
Spend a luxurious moment surrounded by the stunning scenery shaped by Ōzu’s rivers, mountains, and castle.
A miraculous castle brought back to life in the modern era—faithfully and fully reconstructed in wood
Ōzu Castle is one of only five castles in Japan with a wooden reconstructed main keep.
The original keep was built in the early 1600s, but after the Kato family began ruling the Ōzu Domain and the subsequent return of lands and titles to the government (hanseki hōkan), financial difficulties led to the castle’s demolition in 1888.
However, thanks to the strong voices and support of local residents, the castle was faithfully reconstructed in wood and brought back to life over a 10-year period, completed in 1994.
Come and enjoy a one-of-a-kind stay in this miraculous castle that continues to live on in the modern era.
Venue Introduction
Schedule for the Day
At Matsuyama Airport, you will be greeted by a samurai.
Upon arrival at Ōzu Castle, gentlemen will change into traditional armor, while ladies will be dressed in kimono.
With the sound of conch shells and war drums, you will then make your grand entrance into the castle.
After receiving the official Castle Lord Certificate in a special ceremony, you will enter the castle as its lord.
Your evening will continue with a performance of kagura, a traditional sacred dance and music of Ōzu.
As part of your guided tour inside the castle, you’ll have ample time to fully appreciate the miraculous main keep—faithfully reconstructed in wood after more than 100 years.
Following the tour, enjoy a local “Lord’s Feast” (Tonosama Gozen) made from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, served in the historic Kōran Yagura, an Important Cultural Property.
As a guest of the castle stay, you’ll also have exclusive access to a lounge and bathing area in a prime location, offering stunning views of Ōzu Castle right before your eyes.
The next morning, enjoy breakfast at Garyū Sansō, a villa built during the Meiji period by the wealthy merchant Torajirō Kawahara to entertain his guests.
Accompanied by morning tea, you can relax in a private setting while admiring the garden and listening to the gentle sounds of the nearby river.
Afterward, fully immerse yourself in Ōzu’s charm with traditional craft experiences, boat cruises on the Hijikawa River, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and more.
